The Commission for Taxi Regulation - quote from Wikipedia

The Commission for Taxi Regulation (also An Coimisiún Um Rialáil Tacsaithe and Taxi Regulator) was a public body in Ireland that existed between 2004 and 2011 regulating small public service vehicles (SPSVs) - the generic term for taxis, wheelchair accessible taxis, hackneys and limousines.

Taxis and wheelchair-accessible taxis are allowed to pick up passengers in the street or at a stand and have their fares calculated by a meter; hackneys and limousines do not use meters and are not permitted to pick up passengers in the street or at a stand.

The Commission set a single maximum fare structure for taxis for all places in the Republic of Ireland, although drivers are allowed to offer discounts and customers are permitted to give tips to drivers.

Kathleen Doyle was appointed the Commissioner for Taxi Regulation in 2007

Taxi services - an idea for transport

Although most people taxis can seem quite expensive and not very cost-effective means of transport, but sometimes there is no other choice. In many places public transport simply does not go, and if you do not know the area, after which we move may be an additional difficulty. Therefore it is worth to take a taxi, especially when traveling in some people. There are in fact special, larger cab, which allows passage of a greater number of people. I must admit that this solution is cost effective, because after splitting the cost of travel, for example, seven or eight people quickly notice that the cost per person is not as great as it might seem. No wonder that the taxis are very popular means of transport.
